Seed Savers Exchange received this gorgeous, easy-to-grow flower circa 2004 and suspects it is the same variety that Sandra Cumming of Alberta, Canada, wrote about in the 1982 Yearbook: “This summer I hope to obtain poppies from a nearby Hutterite colony that have been handed down for many years and grown extensively each year for seeds. . .to bake an excellent poppy-seed cake.”

Direct sow seeds as early in the spring as the soil can be worked. Poppies don’t transplant well. The seeds are quite small, so plant them in a row or broadcast them in a bed. The seeds need light to germinate, so sow on the surface and press gently into the soil.

  • Direct sow in early spring
  • Germination: 10–25 days.
  • Plant in average but well-drained soil
  • Light: Full sun
  • Spacing: Thin to 6–12” apart

Shipping FAQ's

Question - Why do I get the message "We do not ship to this destination" when trying to check out?

Answer - We don't ship every plant and product variety in store. Some items are too large and some are too sensitive to ship in the mail. You are getting that message because we don't ship one of the products in your order. More than likely there is a plant or pot that is too large to ship.

Question - Do you ship plants in the colder months?

Answer - Yes we do. We do charge an additional $3 handling fee in addition to our normal shipping and handling fees from November 1 to March 1 to cover the cost of heat packs to keep the plants warm during shipment. That fee will be added automatically into the shipping fee you see charged when checking out. We do advise you to take your plant inside as soon as possible upon delivery to avoid potential damage.

Question - Is it safe to ship plants?

Answer - We do our best to ship with the proper packing materials to keep the plant(s) in as safe a shipping environment as possible. The majority of the time, plants will ship just fine.

Question - What if I have a problem with my plant upon arrival?

Answer - Email us within 7 days of your plant arriving if you have any significant damage to your plant during shipping. We will ask for some photos to show the damage, and then we can issue a refund. After 7 days, we are not able to issue a refund. Non-plants have up to 30 days for a refund.
